direcNIC.com ... Katrina - Supplies, Caravans, and Helicopters

Pictures taken on September 4, 2005.

This is Sigmund Solares, I am the CEO of Intercosmos Media Group, Inc., the operators of directNIC.com in Downtown New Orleans. For the past week we have continued to operate our data center while just about everyone else has left.

See http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/ for details about our struggle to operate our business in New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.

A very few of the pictures have comments due to time constraints.

Pictures taken on Sunday, September 4th differ from those of the prior days due to the focus on Stench, Stragglers, and Stagnant Water. By Sunday the stench was overwhelming in many places.

STENCH: I was with someone who kept saying… “Sig you have a strong stomach” as he blocked his nose to try to kill the smell. The stench was worst where people were concentrated. The Dome, the Convention Center, the New Orleans Center as well as the area for about a block encircling those areas is currently one big latrine. I can only imagine how bad it is at Causeway and I-10 where many individuals were / are concentrated as well.

STRAGGLERS: The majority of the residents had left the city already, however, there is still a significant group of stragglers and I have posted pictures of stragglers many of who just do not want to be evacuated. Some of the stragglers just do not want to leave in the busses. So they are waiting for friends to come pick them up. So if you know someone stuck in the city they might be hoping that you call them. Many are getting cell phone service back. So now you can call them. Some people who stayed behind are trying to start their businesses back up. The bar Johnny White’s in the French Quarter was opened for business. Some stragglers include individuals who felt they would be safer staying holed up in their own location (flooded or not) rather than venture to the Dome or Convention Center area. Some stragglers will not leave. Reasons that they will not leave include fear that they cannot bring all their belongings and fear that they will not get to have a choice in where they will be sent. I did hear that individuals have some choice in where they are being evacuated from one high ranking official. However, I do not have any confirmation on this.

STAGNANT WATER: The sitting water has a layer of sludge on top which is getting thicker each day. The water smells bad. The water level is decreasing. However, it is still bad. Much of the area around the Dome and City Hall require a high water vehicle to drive through.
